But figures recently released by the ABS show that Australians are just as happy to move around on their own turf.

With an estimated 359,900 interstate movements in Australia during 2008 and 2009, the greatest proportional impact on a state's or territory's population from net interstate migration (NIM) continues to be experienced by the Northern Territory.

Over the same period, Queensland experienced the largest number of interstate arrivals, gaining 98,200 persons.

Persons aged between 20-34 years accounted for 39 per cent of all interstate movers in 2008-09, while comprising 21 per cent of the total population.
